Harley

When we get back…

Jackson stops talking and I stare at him, waiting for him to continue.

“Aurora tried to kiss me but I pushed her away,” Jackson says. “I’m not sure what part of that you saw, but that’s what happened.”

I nod and look down at the floor.

“I don’t want her, Harley. I don’t want anyone else, but you.”

My mouth forms into an unwilling smile.

“Do you believe me?” he asks. I shrug. I pretend that I don’t believe him, but deep down I know that he’s telling me the truth. He didn’t have to tell me any of this. He could’ve denied it entirely, but he didn’t.

“Do you believe me?” Jackson asks again.

I nod.

“Tell me out loud. I need to hear it.”

“I believe you,” I say after a moment. I reach over and pull him close to me. When our lips touch, everything feels okay again. In this kiss, it’s as if nothing has happened. We never had a fight. We never pulled apart. They never took me. Everything that has occurred suddenly vanishes.

He pulls me closer to him and I lose myself in his mouth. His hands bury themselves in my hair and I run my fingers up and down his chest. When I pull away from him and stare into his eyes the world is back to the way it’s supposed to be.

“I love you,” he says.

“I love you, too.”

He kisses me again.

“Thank you for looking for me,” I mumble through our pressed lips. “That means…so much.”

“I’m just sorry that I couldn’t help you sooner.”

“I can’t believe that you were hit by a truck. That must’ve been so…”

“I was really lucky. Very few people survive something like that, let alone with no injuries.”

I run my fingers over the large bandage on the right side of his forehead. There are other scratches and bruises all over his face as well.

“What about all these?” I ask.

“These don’t count,” he whispers in my ear and pulls my mouth toward his again.

Somewhere behind us the door opens and Marie and Thomas come in.

“I hope I’m not interrupting anything,” she says with a little mischievous smile.

“No, no, of course not. Let me help you with that.” Jackson jumps up and takes the bags that she’s carrying away from her.

“Wow, a gentleman. That’s a keeper.”
